TikTok is a social network created in China in 2016 called Douyin focused on video sharing owned by ByteDance. The idea of this social platform is to promote various genres of music, dance, culture, and education in short clips that can last from 15 seconds up to 3 minutes.
TikTok appeared on the international market in 2017 but reached its most significant popularity in 2020.
We are witnessing the growing growth and expansion of this social platform, which has reached the figure of an incredible 732 million monthly active users in a short time. Statistics show that people spend a minimum of 37 minutes on TikTok daily, while in some countries, such as Germany, over 6.5 billion clips are viewed per month.
The main feature of TikTok is providing its users with tools to record themselves while acting, dancing, singing, or actually doing whatever they want with the help of various filters, stickers, sounds, animations.
The most popular thing among teenagers is the so-called challenges or TikTok Challenge.
All of this would be okay if young people didn’t embark on a series of dangerous challenges to their health and even life, all in the race for likes and online recognition.
These are some of the TikTok Challenges that are banned worldwide.
Blackout Challenge
The Challenge of suffocation has been circulating on the Internet for more than a year.
It consists of cutting off the flow of oxygen, whether someone does it with a belt, rope, or similar, and all to experience the feeling that a person experiences just before death or loss of consciousness.
The survivor later talks about his experience and nominates other people to do the Challenge. It has previously been known as “The Game of Choking” and “Speed Dreaming.”
In addition to being able to have health consequences, this Challenge took several lives.
Skull breaker Challenge
The Challenge starts with three people standing next to each other – people standing on the side perform a movement, usually a jump, and the person in the middle is supposed to imitate it. While the middle person tries to replicate the movement, these two people put their feet up to trip them over.
A fall can and has caused fractures, wounds, loss of consciousness, and life-threatening injuries.
Throwing in the air
The main goal of the Challenge is to throw something in the air and to have people lined up in a circle with the torso bent forward.
People throw all kinds of things in the air: from coins or smaller balls all the way to bicycles and heavier objects. The goal is that no one moves or goes out of the circle until the object falls on someone.
This Challenge can lead to neck fractures, severe blood vessel damage, and even death.
Duct tape
In a Duct tape Challenge, a person attaches themself to an object or pole and tries to break free. Unfortunately, this seemingly harmless Challenge had its first victims, like one boy who fell in an attempt to free himself, injuring his eye socket. As a result, he had a splash of blood vessels in the brain and was in the intensive care unit for a few months due to life-threatening injuries.
Cutting Challenge
The Cutting Challenge encourages people to cut themselves with a knife, scalpel, or similar sharp objects.
Cinnamon Challenge
This Challenge involves swallowing a spoonful of cinnamon without water, which can cause suffocation and life-threatening conditions.
Fire Challenge
As said in the title, it involves fire. People who participate in this Challenge need to spray a design onto a mirror using a flammable liquid and lighting it on fire. Still, things go wrong, and some end up setting themselves on fire accidentally.
Salt and Ice Challenge
This Challenge appeared in January 2019. It involves sprinkling salt on your skin and pressing it with an ice cube for as long as you can endure the pain. This causes a “burning” sensation similar to frostbite.
This Challenge left participants with second-and even third-degree burns, and some required a skin transplant.
Drinking Challenge
Drinking Challenge is a competition in the amount of fluid consumed in abnormal amounts, leading to significant consequences for health and life.
Bright eyes Challenge
This Challenge involves filling a bag with hand sanitizer, bleach, or shaving cream and keep it on the eye for at least a minute until the eye color changes.
There is also a challenge where people use eyeliner to make dots on the whites of the eyes. The goal is to take a great photo without spilling ink. This can lead to serious eye infections and vision damage.
Lip Challenge
This Challenge explains how to enlarge lips at home without surgery and encourages people to do it with superglue. The Challenge consists of gluing the upper lip just under the nose achieving the look of fuller lips. Unfortunately, this can create burns and ultimately destroy the skin of the lips and around the nose.
Snowflake Challenge
This is a challenge in which participants lie on their backs with their mouths open, and someone pours flakes and milk directly into their mouths. This Challenge can lead to suffocation that can be fatal.
Blue Whale Challenge
Blue Whale Challenge is reportedly an online “suicide game” aimed at teenagers who get 50 tasks in 50 days. This Challenge is thought to be linked to numerous deaths around the world. But this game is anything but innocent.
The first tasks are pretty harmless:
“Get up in the middle of the night” or “Watch some scary movie.”
But day by day, the tasks became more and more sinister.
“Step on the multi-story sims.”
“Cut the whale on the arm.”
The ultimate Challenge? A request to commit suicide.
The Challenge allegedly originated in Russia but quickly spread to other countries: Ukraine, India, and the United States.
Hundreds of deaths are allegedly connected with the so-called “suicide game.”
Another viral challenge is for the challenged user to plug the charger into the socket and touch the metal part of the teeth directly connected to the power with a coin.
Such a challenge can lead to a fatal electric shock and a fire, which happens all over the world.
How does TikTok react to all this?
TikTok asked all people who notice such or similar Challenges to report them, whether they just see them on the platform or someone else invites them to do the Challenge.
The platform users can do that by clicking on the white arrow on the right side of the video and then clicking on “Report.”
Such cases are reported by clicking on the category “Suicide, self-harm or dangerous behavior.”
It is crucial to know that everything you see on social networks is not completely real. So don’t do something just because it is currently popular or because someone “popular” is doing it.
That popularity is virtual, and it has nothing to do with real life or how someone lives. You can attract followers by being who you are, talk about topics that interest you, and you will surely find people who will support you.
